Yesterday’s 12-hour hearing on House Bill 5 was a testament to how seriously lawmakers are taking this issue. Committee members asked thoughtful, informed questions, showing a genuine interest in understanding the complexities of hemp policy. We appreciate the time and attention they are dedicating to this important subject.
With the first called special session ending Friday and House Democrats maintaining their quorum break, it’s nearly impossible for HB 5 to advance out of the House before the deadline.
However, Governor Abbott has already announced that a second called special session will begin immediately on Friday. When that happens, the legislative process resets — bills must be reintroduced, and the Senate is expected to move quickly on its priorities, including the THC ban. This means hearings could happen with little to no notice.
We know this has been a long year of advocacy. After more than eight months of legislative engagement, many of us are feeling fatigued — and understandably so. But the stakes remain high. We are committed to continuing the fight for sensible cannabis policy that protects freedom, public health, and free markets.
We’re in this together, and we’ll be ready for whatever comes next.
